L'Immagine Ritrovata at the Venice Festival 2014
L’Immagine Ritrovata is present once again this year at the 71st Venice International Film Festival, taking place from 27 August to 6 September 2014. The laboratory presents a total of 8 restored works in the increasingly successful Venice Classics section, which, since 2012, has been presenting at the Festival a selection of the best classic films restored during the course of the year by film archives, cultural institutes and production houses worldwide.
This year, there are 21 restored films in the Venice Classics section,including Vittorio De Sica's masterpiece Umberto D., restored by CSC – Cineteca Nazionale di Roma in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna, the Vittorio De Sica Association and RTI.

Il Cinema Ritrovato
From June 28th to July 5th, Cineteca di Bologna hosts Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival, 8 days of screenings and meetings in five theatres, as well as open air evening screenings in Bologna’s wonderful main square, Piazza Maggiore, and in Cineteca’s courtyard called Piazzetta Pasolini.
A selection of the very best restorations realized over the past year (and in most cases in recent months) by public and private institutions will be presented both in 35mm and digital formats during the festival.
This year the festival will be preceded (from June 25th to 28th) by The Birth of the Tramp Celebration organized in collaboration with Association Chaplin/Roy Export Company: a 3-day event and an international conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin’s iconic character.
In addition, this year the 6th edition of the theory lessons of the Film Restoration Summer School / FIAF Summer School will be part of Il Cinema Ritrovato, followed by two weeks of restoration practice in the facilities of L'Immagine Ritrovata.

L'Immagine Ritrovata at the Shanghai International Film Festival
At the 2014 Shanghai International Film Festival, L’Immagine Ritrovata is proud to premiere the full 4K restoration of Stage Sisters (Xie Jin, China, 1964), which has just been completed for the Shanghai International Film Festival itself and it was sponsored by Jaeger-LeCoultre. At the same fastival, L'Immagine Ritrovata will also premiere the restored version of Love and duty (Wancang Bu, China, 1931), carried out for the Chinese Taipei Film Archive. The festival will also screen another Chinese film restored by L'Immagine Ritrovata, In the Heat of the Sun (Wen Jiang, Hong Kong, 1994), completed in 2013 for Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment.
At the 2014 Shanghai International Film Festival, L’Immagine Ritrovata will also screen the 4K restorations of two French cinema classics: Hiroshima mon amour (Hiroshima my love, Alain Resnais, France/Japan, 1959), completed for Argos Films, Technicolor Foundation and Cineteca di Bologna, and Les Misérables (Raymond Bernard, France, 1934), carried out for Pathé.
Looking at Italian cinema, in Shanghai L’Immagine Ritrovata will also show many films by the great Italian director Roberto Rossellini, which have been restored for Cineteca di Bologna, Cineteca Nazionale, Cinecittà Luce and Coproduction Office: Roma città aperta (Rome, open city, Italy, 1945), Paisà (Paisan, Italy, 1946), L’amore (Italy, 1948), Stromboli (Italy, 1950), La macchina ammazzacattivi (Machine to Kill Bad People, Italy, 1952), Viaggio in Italia (Journey to Italy, Italy, 1954), and India (India: Matri Bhumi, Italy/France, 1960).

A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS to close the Festival of Cannes
Quentin Tarantino to close the Festival de Cannes with a celebration of the life and work of Sergio Leone. A fistful of dollars (Sergio Leone, Italy, 1964), restored at L’Immagine Ritrovata, will be screened at the Awards Ceremony on Saturday 24th May.
The restoration of A fistful of dollars was undertaken by the Cineteca di Bologna and Unidis Jolly Film with the involvement of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation. The work was carried out by L’Immagine Ritrovata. Cinematographer Ennio Guarneri oversaw the digital calibration.

L'Immagine Ritrovata thanks to its prestigious clients is pleased to attend the Cannes Film Festival, from May 14 to 25 2014, with six restoration works.

Focal Award for the Best Restoration Title
L'immagine Ritrovata has received the prestigious Focal Award for the Best Archive Restoration / Preservation Title for the restoration of Manila in the Claws of Light (Lino Brocka, Philippines, 1975).
The annual Focal International Awards ceremony was held in London on April 30th 2014.
Thanks to Martin Scorsese's World Cinema Foundation, the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Cineteca di Bologna, L'Immagine Ritrovata has had the honor to take part in the restoration of Manila in the Claws of Light directed by Lino Brocka. The restoration and grading work, in particular, were supervised by the film's cinematographer, Mike de Leon.
In 2013 L'immagine Ritrovata had already received the Focal Award for the Preservation Film Laboratory of the Year and as well the Venice Classics Award for Best Restored Film La proprietà non è più un furto (Elio Petri, 1973).

L'Immagine Ritrovata at the Hong Kong FILMART
We are proud to announce that L’Immagine Ritrovata will be take part at Hong Kong FILMART between 24th – 27th March 2014. FILMART is Asia’s largest film market, which takes place for its 17th edition.
During FILMART there will be more than 380 screenings, with over 70 world and international premieres as well as thematic conferences.
From the 24th March to the 7th April the Hong Kong International Film Festival takes place as well, and L’Immagine Ritrovata is going to show 4 of its restoration works :

Restored version of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
The new digitally restored version of Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (R. Wiene, Germany, 1920), carried out by L’Immagine Ritrovata, was premiered at the Berlinale on February 9, 2014 at the 64. Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin (6-16 February 2014).
The world premiere of the new version is programmed in the Berlinale Classics section of the Berlinale which includes the newest restorations of film classics as well as rediscovered films.
The restoration was carried out by L’Immagine Ritrovata and supported by the Murnau-Stiftung.

Supporter FIAF
Since January 2014 and through the whole year L’Immagine Ritrovata will be a supporter of the International Federation of Film Archives, which Cineteca di Bologna is part of since 1989.
In 2013 FIAF launched a new partnership scheme to offer non-profit organizations (foundations, museums, universities) and commercial companies (laboratories, equipment suppliers, etc.) with a keen interest in the film heritage sector, an opportunity to develop a closer relationship with FIAF and its affiliates, and to financially support FIAF’s annual activities.
